In 1704 the United Kingdom occupies Gibraltar from Spain, that cedes it in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 to the United Kingdom. In 1830 Gibraltar becomes a British crown colony. Under the 1969 constitution Gibraltar has a chief minister and a House of Asembly as it did already in 1964. The first chief minister is Joshua Hassan of the Gibraltar Association for Civil Rights, also known as the Gibraltar Labour Party-Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (GLP), who governs Gibraltar until 1969. That year he is succeeded by Robert Peliza of the Integration with Britain Party (IBP), but in 1972 he regains the premiership. Hassan remains in office until 1987. That year he is succeeded by Adolfo Canepa of the GLP. The elections of 1988 are won by the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party (GSLP) under Joe Bossano. He becomes chief minister. The GSLP is confirmed in the 1992 elections, but in 1996 it is defeated by the conservative Gibraltar Social Democrats of Peter Caruana. In 2000 the GSD even enlarges its share of popular vote.
