Christopher Columbus discovers in 1502 the island of Madinina. In 1635 France acquires Martinique and establishes it as a French colony. Between 1762 and 1763, 1794 and 1802 and finally between 1809 and 1814 the island is occupied by the United Kingdom. In 1946 Martinique becomes a French overseas département and is ruled as part of mainland France. For that reason it is not included in the Electionworld database.
