On the islands of 'Uvea (Wallis) and Futuna some indigenous kingdoms exist.
In 1887 the two Futuna kingdoms - Tu`a (also styled Alo) and Sigave - become French protectorates as well as 'Uvea (Wallis).
The archipelago is incorporated into New Caledonia in 1888; royalty continues.
Wallis and Futuna secede from New Caledonia in 1959 as a seperate overseas territory with internal self-government.
In Wallis and Futuna the metropolitan French parties are dominant.
Next to these parties the Union pour Wallis et Futuna (Union for Wallis and Futuna, UWF) is active.
Since 1999 the Union Populaire pour Wallis et Futuna (Popular Union for Wallis and Futuna, UPWF) is represented in parliament.
